What is Dazzle
Born in a fever dream, drawing creative kinetic energy and inspiration from Hong Kong cinema, punk rock, alternative music, arthouse cinema, cult classics and pulp fiction, Dazzle is a bold and wildly original vision adding up to an intoxicating, slightly disorienting, heightened experience that lives up to its name.
Under the big top of a globe-trotting circus fueled by magic and filled with outcasts, dreamers, assassins, charlatans, monsters and angels, a young orphan girl must find both her dysfunctional family and her true self. When the circus lights dim, the real magic begins. This is the world of Dazzle.
Dazzle offers an emotional high-wire act exploring what happens when you go beyond the limit of your dreams. Complex and resonant storylines that cut deep, revealing that the Dazzle cast are outcasts, resilient survivors. The characters wear their hard won experience as badges of honor, gathering strength from it and each other. The emotional acrobatics are amped up when the Dazzle Circus must defy external forces that threaten to destroy the circus itself.
Global Outlook
Out of the box
Although a blend of action, romance and fantasy, Dazzle is grounded in the real world. The story’s real-life settings sprawl across the globe, from the ancient Silk Road markets and snow capped mountains of Central Asia to medieval cave cities in the Caucasus, from across the great Sahara desert to the grand and storied cities of Dubrovnik, Istanbul, Beijing and Prague.
Actual history and historic characters are weaved into the story’s narrative. A nod to influences from Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and the Far East will be recognized by local audiences and introduced to those not yet familiar with the impact these very real characters have had on the regions and countries from which they are inspired and based.
The focus of this comic is squarely on its characters, unique settings and set pieces. It is an ensemble piece with nearly a dozen prominent characters. We are not spending time talking ad nauseam about the plot and we do not use thought bubbles or narration text. We assume our audience can think for itself. Dazzle is not American-centric. Of the twelve main characters, one is American while all others hail from different corners of the globe, much like the Dazzle creative team itself. Our creator is from the U.S., our illustrator is from Istanbul, our colorist from Mexican City, our cover artist is British and other contributing artists hail from Croatia, Italy, Kyrgyzstan and Hong Kong.
Dazzle was conceived as a long term project from the start. We want our audience investing in characters that are going to be around for the long haul. The prevalent comic series of 4-6 issues is not what we are after. There are synopses for 30 issues so far with a variety of unique side projects and double-issues waiting in the wings.
